Despite high costs of cable line construction, demand for new cable lines is continuously growing. This is explained by growing power consumption, development and sophistication of electrical grids. Most widespread lines are underground high-voltage power cable lines.
High environmental safety of state-of-the-art cable lines allows for replacement of overhead lines by cable lines and vacation of space earlier occupied by overhead lines for other facilities.
Depending on particular situation, power cable lines are installed by various methods:
• Installation directly in the ground (in trench), sometimes using pipelines;
• Installation in cable galleries and tunnels;
• Other installation methods (in ducts, on trays or racks, etc.).
Individual standards and technical regulations apply to each installation method. Specialized devices and mechanisms are used for installation.
These works are quite complex and performed using special methods and techniques.
Normal performance of an electrical power system will largely depend on selection of the most optimal installation configurations.
When a long cable is installed, need often arises for its extension or branching of a separate line. To ensure a fully leak-proof condition of the internal part of a cable, cable connectors are used. Cable connectors are also used for connection in case of cable breaks.Cable connectors are used without limitation for any cable installation methods underground or overhead. At connection joints, cable is reliably protected against atmospheric effects, mechanical impacts and supports reliable electrical contact between all conductors. The construction of a cable connector allows for orderly arrangement of each wire in connection cassette cells and for leak-proof connection of all insulation and outer armored sheath elements. If an electrical cable connector has been correctly selected and installed, it adds virtually no distortion to signals conveyed through communication cables and does not reduce voltages and currents in power cables
